Like the tranditional Tetris formula, you have to rotate and drop shaped bricks called tetrominoes onto a board. You can clear tetrominoes by completing rows across both sides but be careful because if tetrominoes overflow off the top, you lose the game.
During gameplay, you will notice small grids that represent the other 98 players displayed at the sides of the main board. Tetris 99 allows players to target individual players or let the computer automatically target other players base on a number of 4 criteria. Those are random players, the ones who are targeting the player, the ones close to be defeated and the ones who own possess badges. To earn badges, you have to knock out a player with garbage or gray lines.
